An open hand - caring for the future
The Abhayaratna Trust exists because of a single act of generosity. Abhayaratna chose to leave a gift of money in his will to help Order members, and that gesture made it possible for the Trust to be founded. All the help and support we have given since then to Order members can be traced back to that original gift.
This year we have gratefully received legacy gifts from Bodhilila and Khemavira, following a generous bequest from Lalitavyuha last year. Each is, in its own way, a continuation of Abhayaratna's original gesture — a reminder that acts of generosity can extend far beyond the moment they are made.
Lalitavyuha's sadhana was Green Tara, whose mudra of an open hand symbolises giving whatever is most needed. It is a fitting image for what a legacy gift does: it keeps an open hand extended long after the person who made it has died.
Why leave a legacy gift?

We are fortunate that some Order members have already considered leaving a legacy to the Trust. Munisha, Saddhanandi and Dhammadinna are among those who have shared why they chose to include the Trust in their wills. Munisha and Saddhanandi have recorded short videos about their decision to leave a legacy gift to the Trust

"I was very inspired by Dharmachari Abhayaratna leaving all his money to help Order members. Having seen the difference even a small grant can make, I am happy to do the same."
The Impact of a Legacy Gift
Legacy gifts help us to:
Continue giving grants to Order members facing hardship throughout the world.
Continue our work supporting Order members in India.
Respond quickly when global emergencies arise, as we were able to do during the Covid pandemic.
Develop and support longer-term initiatives such as Sangha Support Networks.
Secure the future of the Abhayaratna Trust as a resource for the Order.
How to Leave a Legacy
Leaving a legacy is straightforward. You can leave a specific sum or a proportion of your estate. If your will has already been written, a codicil can be added. Suggested wording and a codicil template can be found on our Legacies page: Abhayaratna Trust Legacies.

Visit us at the convention
If you will be at the convention please come and pay us a visit. We will have a stall in the marketplace, so do stop by and say hello. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the Trust. We will also be running a Fringe event on Sangha Support Networks on Sunday 23 August, from 2:30 to 3:45, so please join us for that.
Farewell to Jinavamsa
Jinavamsa, who has been our Donor Care and Communications officer, is leaving the Trust after 10 years. He has contributed greatly to the Trust in his time with us and we are very grateful for all his work, including creating our newsletters, maintaining our website and social media channels, and taking care of and supporting our donors. We will miss his calm and steady presence and his warmth, friendliness, and creative input. The Trustees and the Team warmly thank Jinavamsa and wish him well in his next endeavours.
